Belly Dancers : DIANA

Dina’ First Jordanian Professional Belly Dancer: I don’t Know Love…I Hate Men
Young Dina is determined to follow belly dancing as her profession even though it violates the traditions of Jordanian society which does not accept this art form which is popular in neighboring countries.
Dina believes that the situation will eventually change, and that her chosen art form will be accepted in her home country as it is in other parts of the world.
Dina explains that she has enjoyed her personal freedom since early childhood, and this may have been the main reason why she was encouraged to follow dance as a profession.
At the beginning, she says, everyone who saw me at a party, used to advise me to follow dancing as a profession. But, she adds, the idea was not in my mind at all. This situation continued until one of the contractors whom she met at a special party made an offer for her to dance at a new year eve party (2000) due to the delay in the arrival of a dancer whom he had contracted. After the pressure from her friends, Dina accepted the offer and danced at the party.
The Jordanian dancer said that when she was called three times by the master of ceremonies to begin her dance act on the stage, she was shivering with fear and reluctant to step onto the stage but at last, she had no other alternative but to begin dancing.
Responding to a question as to whether she interacted with her audience directly or not, Dina said that she was partly scared but at the end of her first dance session, she descended from the stage and and began dancing among the audience. She added that it was a normal thing for her to face a strong opposition and she had to fight a long battle with her three brothers to convince them. “ I took my brothers with me to one of my parties to “prove to them the opposite” and I succeeded in changing their points of view regarding the reputation of dancers and their work problems”, said Dina.
As for her mother, Dina said that she expected her to be determinably opposed to the idea. She added that the only choice was to take her mother to one of the parties and dance in front of her to impose a de facto situation, which she did. After the party, Diana’s mother did not comment, but as the artist said it did not take her long to convince her mother of her new profession.
The young dancer performed eight separate dances, which each lasted for 45 minutes. After the party, the manager of the hotel where the party was held offered her a work contract for three months.
Responding to a question about how she discovered herself, Dina said that she used to spend some time with her friends at discos and all of them advised her to follow dancing as a profession. She added that she did not learn how to dance but her dancing since early childhood, and participating in the school activities after every academic year, helped her a great deal.
Dina said that she was doing well at school and was the Kingdom’s champion in running.
When asked for how long she can dance continuously, Dina said for three hours after which she only needs a short break and then she can resume dancing.
Dina said that she had chosen dancing as a profession because it is the only profession that she can master. She said that many people advised her to sing, but she did not do so because according to her, her voice is an ordinary one. She only tried to sing once in the bathroom. She added that she does not have any problem now in her profession. She was only once invited by someone to go out with him after her work in the hotel, but she apologized.
Dina believes that she would not be able to support her living from this profession in Jordan and said that she had many work offers in the United States, Sweden and Germany but she refused them because she fears that she could not mange her own affairs and might be cheated abroad. Furthermore she said that she is responsible for her brothers and son and cannot travel to a foreign country.
Responding to a question about her opinion of love, Dina said that she does not know it, and she hates men. She added that she was married at the age of 14 to a man older than her mother and discovered that she did not love him but rather needed the affection of a father.
Dina is very happy when she is with her female friends without any man among them because she hates men. She keeps away from her friends in the artistic environment fearing jealousy and conspiracy. She hates to lie and considers that more dangerous than death. She added that all of her life was full of lies, particularly her marriage.
The artist does not dance when she is sad, and if she faces a sad situation before a party, she apologizes and leaves the venue. She respects freedom, and she considers herself free because nobody questions where she goes.
Dina said that a dancer does not necessarily do something shameful in dancing, other non-dancers may commit unethical actions without wearing a dance dress.
“ My frankness causes me a lot of trouble”, Dina said at the end of her interview.
